Drool rash during teething – what it looks like

A lot of people find Baby Tips Online by searching for “drool rash”. I wrote a bit about drool rash in my teething tips article but I realized that I never included a picture of what drool rash looks like. When my son was going through his first stage of teething, he got a pretty bad case of drool rash. I managed to find a picture that was taken during this stage, but I didn’t take it when the drool rash was its worst.

Drool rash is very common when babies are teething. My son would get a rash every time he teethed which wasn’t surprising since he has extremely sensitive skin. The only thing I found that helped keep it at bay was to pat away the excess drool as much as possible throughout the day. If it got really bad I would sometimes put a bit of petroleum jelly on the rash.

Eventually the rash will go away so unless it’s causing discomfort for your baby, don’t worry too much about it. It’s all part of the glorious teething process!

Thank you for your post…I’ve been searching for some real pics of a teehing rashes to compare my son’s to. His rash looks terrible, it’s getting really chafed. I keep it dry and do the petroleum jelly, but his skin is just so sensitive from both of his parent’s heritage…poor kid!

Hi Carrie – You’re welcome :)

My son has really sensitive skin too. Hope your poor little guy clears up soon! I wish I knew of something that worked better to get rid of drool rash.

I had tried several baby lotion found in generic supermarkets and stores and I remember I liked them until I did research on how many chemicals are in them. I dont want those chemicals on my baby’s skin!!

I use the Made from Earth skincare products now for my kid – specifically the Lavender Calm lotion. I am loving it because it does not have a penetrating scent…any lotions that smell too strong like fragrence have too much perfumes makes me wonder about the hypoallergenic claim. Since Made from Earth doesnt use chemicals or fragrances all their stuff is hypoallergetic…go for the Lavender Calm lotion if you are looking for a great Non Toxic baby lotion. . .

Thank you for this post. My 16 month old has a rash that is in the corner of his mouth and is oblong, running down about a quarter of an inch towards his chin. Until seeing these photos I was very concerned that he might have some how contracted a cold sore. He’s been drooling really bad, so it’s much more likely that the red streak is being caused by that.

@Wendy – It does sound like drool rash. It can look pretty red and sore sometimes but once that drooling slows down it will get better.

Thank you so much for the comments and picture. My 15 month-old has a nasty looking rash covering his whole chin. He’s been grumpy lately and has drooled for a few days now. No sign of more teeth at this point, but now I’m sure it’s just drool rash. Thanks!

Hi Elizabeth – it definitely sounds like drool rash. Teething can be such a long and drawn out process. I remember my daughter’s teething poking out, then going back in for a week or two, then popping out again. At the time it seemed like it would never end but it really doesn’t last that long.
